Letter from the Webmaster
Dear Reader,

Greetings. A common myth that prevails is that women are less intelligent than men and they rarely make good managers and leaders. God has made them smaller and less stronger physically, but that does not have anything to do with brains and guts. This week's management article is on women leaders who became great by their discipline, focus, hard work and vision. The article is available for global public access by clicking on any of the links below.

Thank you for your time and have a nice week,

Madhavan Gopalachary

article of the week

Three most powerful women leaders the world has ever seen – Indira Gandhi, Margaret Thatcher and Golda Meier

-----The entire above woman wore pants and most of the males around them were either nervous wrecks or bumbling idiots. They were all normal women with families and grown up children. None of them had extraordinary education or formal management or leadership training. They achieved their greatness by sheer hard work, discipline and focus. They were self-driven, combative, aggressive, and assertive and at the same time retained their femininity, grace and charm. We all have a lesson to be learnt. Every one of us can become a good leader, if not a great one, but we must have vision, discipline and focus, backed by hard work -----

Recent Management Articles, Editorials & Newsletters for global access
  1. Oil prices and its impact on economies - According to a UN report, as quoted by the Bloomberg News, every $ 10 increase per barrel reduces the global GDP output by 0.5%. The impact on developing economies is still greater. US is a very large producer but still imports a very large quantity. India produces 40% of its requirements with the balance being imported. It needs to improve its oil exploration further. One can imagine the plight of countries which produce no oil.

  2. Future trends in private equity investments - The private equity industry has definitely matured. Managing risk in cyclical markets is an essential part of its job. Its success has been in large part due to its ability to deliver exceptional returns, irrespective of market conditions, to its investors. The challenge is to maintain that performance as the scale of opportunities and operations continues to grow

  3. Mega brands, Perceptions & Reality - There can be many more questions, case studies and examples of companies trying to encash their brands by leveraging them. Only a handful has succeeded but majority have failed. You may as well ask how these big companies survived such decisions and moments ? The top 10 global brands consist of both product or service brands. How do we justify that ?

  4. Global Food Crisis - The New York Times is carrying a series of articles on the global food crisis in the year 2008. Not many know that India is a major producer of crops and next only to USA. The happenings in India on the basic crops front decides the world food prices just like oil prices are decided in the middle east. I read one article on June 22, 2008 in the New York Times titled 'India’s Growth Outstrips Crops '. I had written an article titled 'Food or Computers' in April 2002 and I have revised it based on the present circumstances. However, many of my observations are still valid.

  5. Good Governance - There must be adequate internal and external controls through audits by people and firms who cannot be bought or have no vested interests. We cannot afford to have an Enron and Arthur Anderson situation. The members must consist of people from all walks of life known for their integrity. They must be compensated suitably and adequately. Such people are not cheap.

What makes us different and unique ? - Grit, Focus and Determination !

Our management site is amongst the first of its kind in the world and was started on December 16, 1998. We are from a developing country with no big banner supporting or sponsoring us. We had to face doubting Thomas's, skepticism, bias, prejudices in the initial stages. We had no prior experience in a highly competitive global environment, coming from a country with a socialistic past and a restrictive license based economy, where knowing people in the right places, having tons of money and how to grease the palms were the only qualifications required for success in business. We had to build our credentials at the global level. We had no money but had belief in ourselves, our abilities, attitudes, knowledge, talents and skills. There are three kinds of writers in the management arena. The first kind are the highly qualified academics who are theoretical and write from their lofty ivory towers, which very few can understand. The second kind are the functional experts who focus on 'quick fix' solutions, without a holistic view on the subject. For people in business, both kinds do not fully meet the needs. We realized the need for suitable blend of theory and practice and written by people who have actually captained ships and are the third kind. Not all captains are necessarily good at communications. The captains must possess unimpeachable integrity, honesty, ethics, involvement and commitment. It was essential to keep the complicated and difficult concepts simple to understand.

Our unbiased, impartial analysis, views and opinions count in the corridors of power. We influence individuals, organizations and governments and shape policy and strategy with no formal power or position of authority. That is what true leadership is all about. We didn't go in for any search engine optimization, banner exchanges or links or fancy designs to attract people. If the content is good, people will come to your site and the quote of the great Ralph Waldo Emerson is given at the bottom of the page. We received global recognition within three years of presence on the web. We are approached and invited for contributions of articles and deliver keynote addresses on management from all over the world. We are driven by our strong beliefs, culture, integrity and value system and are extremely proud about it. Grit, Focus and Determination sums it up all. Size has never been an obsession with us but being ranked along with the best in the world, is. This is where our difference and uniqueness lies because the biggest is not necessarily the best.

Important and must read notification for all

We would like to reiterate that all our pages are covered by US Federal, State and Indian Copyright Laws and governed by the Berne Convention on Copyrights in countries that are signatories to it. All our DNS, web and mail servers are located in USA and we will enforce US Laws in case of breach of copyright and the jurisdiction of San Jose county courts in the state of California, USA will apply, though our virtual private server is located in Atlanta, Georgia and the server provider is based in Houston, Texas. Instances have come to our notice that some unscrupulous people are using our pages, including cached ones by search engines, their portions and images without permission and it is a copyright violation. This is similar to stealing a newspaper from a newsstand. This does not apply to brief quotes as permitted under the US Copyright Act of 1976 (sections 107 and/or 108) and subsequent amendments, if any. However, this exception does not cover images. We have never denied permission to anyone for personal and non commercial use. Any unauthorized use will entail legal action by us and consequences of not taking permission can turn out to be very expensive. This may please be taken as a friendly warning, as Copyright and IPR violations are taken very seriously by the legal systems in all countries that have signed the convention. It will be deemed that all visitors have read this notification and understood it. However, ignorance of laws is not acceptable or tenable in a court of law.
